Notations
I think about composition in a way that emphasizes my specific role in a social process of music-making. This leads to a superficial paradox in which I adopt a vocabulary that seems to describe composition as a hermetic activity, as an act of production deracinated from any social system: I describe the products of my labor as "notations," not "compositions" or "works." Why? Because this seemingly trivial distinction is elemental to my creative philosophy. I embrace and celebrate through my work an ontology of music that is contingent upon social experience, that is is never culminated, and that has at its core the dilemmas of technological mediation, symbolic interpretation, and human communication between different consciousnesses. My job as a composer is to invite others into a collaborative relationship in which everybody has a primary role in the creative act.
Hence the superficial paradox. When I compose, I do not make music; I consider, predict, and simulate music, and I make a notation. After this, someone with a technology for making sound, in collaboration with someone who attends to the sound as it is made, makes music.
